Yesterday's "town hall" meeting in the Belleview City council chambers was anything but interesting. The slide presentation Congressman Stearns presented consisted mostly of the many, and wrong, reasons that we must drill for oil in ANWR and off the Florida coastline and the incredibly wrong statement that "there has never been an oil spill from an offshore oil platform". Wow. Skimming over the only 2 slides concerning Iraq, the Congressman declared that "any of my colleagues that vote against ANWR should be voted out of office". Well that ought to land Mr. Stearns in a bit of hot water with his own GOP since their Presidential nominee, Sen. McCain, just recently compared drilling in ANWR to drilling in the everglades or in the Grand Canyon. This glaring disconnect was only one of several gaffs Mr. Stearns provided. Asked as to what his Committee (VA Hospital Oversight) has done to prevent the abuses at Walter Reed Military Hospital, Mr. Stearns said, "well, a General got fired and the place is really cleaned up now." Pressed for an answer as to when he or his committee penned legislation to ensure it never happens again and is funded properly, Mr. Stearns parried with "never is a long time" and statistics about PTSD!?!? Thanks for the non-answer. Asked why market curbs, similar to trading curbs on the DOW, have not been re-instated on the oil desk at the COMEX (they were cancelled 7 years ago) to prevent the intra-day trading spikes of recent days, Mr. Stearns deferred to his 20 year old assistant in the back for future review. Since Mr. Stearns is on the House Energy Committee, I thought that, maybe, he knew a thing or two about that sort of stuff. Sadly, Mr. Stearns lack of intensity and passion about what's going on in the most troubling region of the world is reason enough for this voter to "throw the bum out" come November. But, oh, there's so much more.
